I feel like most people will continue to use the defaults unless design thinking also becomes accessible to everyone

I guess it's like developing a set of skills which give you confidence that you can iterate on something and make it both more personalized and polished instead of feeling like every step you take away from the defaults will always be less polished

Totally. If I had to chose between an off-the-rack suit and making my own suit, I would definitely pick off-the-rack. But when I have access to a skilled tailor, that changes the equation

Yeah, I guess if the premise is that a truly skilled tailor will always give you a great suit no matter what you ask for then yes. But that hasn't been my experience with design systems 😄
