I agree with your points. There are many valid ways to create, and sometimes it's just throwing a bunch of pieces on the floor and "finding the fun," and sometimes it's having a vision and seeing it through. There can be childlike wonder and discovery in "finding the fun." ...

"Fun" is a troublesome word how it's undefined and ambiguous word. Games have been saddled with their weight, although interestingly, videogames moved on from it a while ago. Say what you want about capitalism but I suspect the larger audience makes it an easier medium to experiment in. ...

Personally I find "find the fun" useful when I put it in context: if I have a clear vision and audience, then it reminds me to pay attention to when players are engaged vs turning away.

Totally. That feels like the huge missing piece of “find the fun”. And yeah, video games do have an easier time and I’m guessing part of it is ease of distribution. Cause RPGs seem to be in a similar boat since they can rely on just pdfs. I think board games can find their indie format though

"One off experiences are valuable" really resonates with me. There are plenty of games I'd consider a good experience and would recommend that I'd probably only play once.
