I can’t capture the value of Rust in one post, but I think my favorite aspect isn’t the Borrow Checker or the Type System, but how it all comes together to Correctness. I always have more confidence in my Rust code compared to other languages, even when the tooling and tests are equivalent.

I think it is how all the Rust systems come together in a way that I’ve not seen in other languages. I’ve written Go, Python, JS/TS for years, but Rust is the best at inspiring confidence in your own code.

When I was writing C, I delighted in the fact that I could account for every single byte that my program was using. Understanding exactly what everything was doing step by step. But I grew tired of the mental burden of checking that everything worked just right and of off-by-ones.

Python got me hooked with a much nicer developper experience, and with very explicit errors whenever I made a mistake. But I grew tired of having to wait until running in the exact conditions that would trigger a bug because I had forgotten to handle None.

I looked into various other languages. OCaml looked like it was doing things the Proper Way. But it was a pain to use in practice. It felt like the point was more about feeling smart than solving problem.

Finally I got into Rust. And this is basically the language I was looking for all along. It's not perfect. I'll probably grow tired of its limitations one day and, hopefully another language will take its place. But, for now, it feels like a breeze of fresh air, and I really enjoy programming again.
