I vaguely remember a thread in the early stages of HTML5 discussions and WHATWG formation that dealt with comment syntax, e.g. about the SGML rule that allowed `` in theory and how to handle stuff like `<!>`, which I had been using as a Todo marker.

The early marker proposal was <!marker>, since that also parses as a comment, but it was changed to <?marker> for XML compat.
