It’s elegant in principle! 1/sqrt(2), invariant under folding+rotation. Clever! But I think ultimately designer brain. Just make people write two versions of each app if the app cares that much about presentation aspect ratio.

Yup, it's 100% that trick, I was explaining it like that for some folks last week. Unfortunately, I don't think it makes for a device that feels good to hold or carry in your pocket.
