To them, "family values" means a man owns his family: he owns his slave-wife and he owns any children he forces her to produce. And he can do anything he wants to any of these people, including rape them and beat them up and kill them. Possessions.

"family values" means putting the structure of family above everything else. Everything. Abuse, rape, all sorts of despicable behavior are excused to preserve the structure of family.

But that's the thing; they do. Just a very specific definition that puts keeping the peace and union of the family above the well-being of the individuals that make up said family. They care very deeply about a narrow definition of the family unit.
