I really want to learn, use and love emacs ...but it just feels like it's made by people who don't like people.

Have you tried doom with vim bindings? Switching to that was quite smooth coming from vim 5y ago. The discoverability of keybindings and commands helps a lot, but I still cannot read nor write lisp and I really don't care for the customisation part that people seem to like so much.
