The math of MSCA applications: - Suppose writing an application takes 2 months. - Total cost of hiring a PhD is maybe €5k/month (??) - Applying costs €10k. - Total cost for 21k proposals: €210M - Total funding: €400M So half the budget is wasted on just applications.

The €10k application cost should change the advice from “polish harder” to “check the base rate”: ask how many proposals this host submitted and funded in the last MSCA round.

There's also a bunch of prisoner dilemma in here... It's best if everybody decides to only do minimal polishing. Ideally there would be a rule against overly polishing 😅
