i think them being faint makes it work! if the stripes had any higher contrast though i think it’d be too busy

Yeah. I noticed that in the sketch it was a clear pattern, but I struggled to make it work. I think I put it on Soft Light and 50% opacity or something before I was happy with them. Maybe it had worked a bit better if I rendered it differently.
