this is really good! only thing that tripped me up is that just because a solved category put an item in a corner doesn't mean that it's locked there

I think it's good as designed, because otherwise, the corner becomes a hint. The way the designer made the squares obviously selectable is well done, and it's something that is only slightly confusing the first time you encounter it. Agreed there's some doubt, but I can't conceive a better design
