It's not zero-sum. You build the place that's yours, and you engage in places that are theirs. And as theirs shut down, go Nazi, etc, you still have your place.

I was thinking of email. Back when I had a vanity URL, I got unbearable amounts of spam email. Comments weren’t so bad at the time. But I guess having your own website doesn’t necessarily mean using the domain for email.
