You might be a minority if... ...people tell you that your reports of discrimination are just you being too "sensitive." ...you get attacked or undermined for using proven best practices. ...people in positions of unearned privilege take from you and keep taking.

...you have to radically alter your physical appearance or dress to look more like those in positions of privilege. ...you can't explain your lack of productivity due to the effects of discrimination without hiring managers thinking you complain a lot and are trying to avoid responsibility.

...you have to "whiten," "straighten," "masculinize," or "cisgender-ify" your job application materials. ...you have to go by your middle name or initial because your actual first name sounds "too ethnic." ...you can't be yourself at work without risk of losing your job.

...the people who discriminate against you are happy to tell you how much they "support" equality. ...hiring managers and committees camouflage their discrimination against you with claims that you aren't a good "fit."

...you deliver an outstanding performance in your interview/campus visit/etc., get applause and congratulations, score higher on their own internal reviews/evals, and you still get torpedoed for something so tiny, something common or insignificant, or that someone flat out invented to drag you down.

...those interviewing you assume you will be a fit with that one other person they already have who matches your racial/gender/sexual identity. ...those interviewing you assume that the only ones who will find you relatable are others who share your particular identity(ies).

...the hiring manager or business hiring people boasts that they "support" free speech, but in practice only support the "free speech" of those like themselves. ...you get asked illegal questions about your race, gender, or sexuality... ...and no one there cares and they attack YOU for it.

...years of discrimination have a cumulative and compounding effect on you that consumes all of your time, reduces your productivity, and makes it virtually impossible to escape of "pull yourself up by the bootstraps." ...the discrimination is so pervasive and total you start doing it to yourself.

...you are well-qualified, but no one wants to hire you. ...employers are eager to interview you so they can report that they interviewed diverse candidates, but they were only interested in using you to give themselves cover.

...you've constantly struggled with unemployment or under-employment no matter your strong qualifications. ...you have to survive on food stamps. ...your food stamps got taken away. ...you have to go to the food pantry for food and pretty much everyone around you is also a minority.

...you have to sell your things to survive. ...you have to sell your family heirlooms to survive. ...you have to do things you swore you'd never do to survive. ...you have to sell your soul to survive.
