*whispers* you can cut off anyone in your life for whatever reason you want

Another one. The premise: Young people are cutting off their parents for minor mistakes and misunderstandings. The lead anecdote: A woman severs ties with her family for refusing to get vaccinated before her wedding — to a man who *lost his mother and brother to COVID*

i know enough people whose family members, parents especially, have engaged or still engage in things that bring significant mental distress to them to know that these decisions really aren't made lightly

also, i'm less interested in this storyline than the fact that we don't treat parents who cut off their kids nearly similar. like, how many gay and trans kids get kicked out of their homes and cut off by their parents are there? i'd wager FAR more than those who cut off their parents.

As a daughter and a parent, I think it's far worse when a parent cuts ties to a child, than vice versa. Parents owe a duty of care, which changes as the child becomes an adult, but a child owes nothing to a parent. Those ties exist because of a lifetime of love.

When I was young, that was always my father's go-to threat. He threatened to cut me off in college... if I switched to a BA program from a BSc program. 🙄 Then he tried to oppose my wedding, so I simply didn't invite him, and it took about 8 years after that before we were even on speaking terms.😒

Some parents just think kids are their possession. Chattel they can control with financial pressure and/or emotional/physical threats. When their kids turn around and show independence, they act like the dog just learned to speak - even though it's their job as parents to launch those kids. 😑
