Presumably the 3 leaders don't know this, nobody in their cabinets knows this, none of their special advisers knows this... otherwise... why would they put out a letter that's so blatantly wrong? What is the motivation here, to demand something that can easily be shown they already have?

Because it's a cheap ploy to distract their citizens from the real problems caused by these national leaders. And they can get away with it because the education systems designed by these very same national governments deliberately keep their citizens ignorant of how the EU works.

*Sigh*. You vote for your PM or president which as part of the European Council elected vdL as the Commission's president. This election is confirmed by the European Parliament, which is composed of parties and members for which again *you* vote. How the fuck is this so hard to understand?
