@nytimes.com sane-washing comes to interior design: "ornate". They spray-painted cheap ornamental plaster from Home Depot, and a lot of it. Better words: garish, tawdry, gaudy, gauche, chintzy, vulgar, meretricious, kitschy, overwrought. My favorite: desperate over-compensation.
