FourSquare is in the business of data syndication - to Apple, Alexa, etc and to anyone else that needs it. So this dataset is only like a point-in-time export.

Thanks for sharing @simonwillison.net! I just read the original announcement. Looks like this includes all the places and not just limited to non-commercial points. They have a clear way of filtering out non-commercial places too!! docs.foursquare.com/data-product...
