An new UN investigation warns that AI's water use in 2030 will match the needs of 1.3 billion people. “We have to think about that very long supply chain that starts with the extraction of critical minerals in the poor areas of the world,” says @kavehmadani.bsky.social, one of the report's authors.

Water has been used to cool industrial processes for years. The water just doesn't disappear. It is released back into nature once it's cooled. While data centers may USE a lot of water, they don't DESTROY it. Many misleading articles insinuating that whole lakes and oceans will disappear.

We don't need AI so badly that we can take that much water to make it work. We've survived just fine without it for all of these millennia. I really do not understand why humans are so fascinated with making things that will destroy us or make us obsolete. It's baffling behavior to me.

That's a valid concern, but what about the 1.3 billion people who might struggle to access water in 2030? Are we just trading one crisis for another?
