i don't think i would know what to think about the anthropic ipo (which seems to be quite promising financially, based on the folks i follow on here who read s-1s for a living) if i hadn't read 'blood in the machine,' @bcmerchant.bsky.social's excellent book on the luddites.

idk man. it would have been nice if these companies all just collapsed under the weight of their own ambition and i guess some of them still might but so long as anthropic remains profitable it is doing so on the back of labor it did not pay for and i think that’s bad.
but if we're encouraging people to reconsider their priors on ai, i think it would be pretty cool if we could maybe not lose sight of the fact that this technology was willfully built on mass theft. a lot of reporting just kinda takes this as a given and doesn't bother foregrounding it. seems bad!
They actually list the fact that it was stolen was one of the risk factors, excerpted here by Hamilton Nolan (last on the list, though they're all quite funny). open.substack.com/pub/howthing...
i can do this all day
lol another guy replied to this trying to argue about copyright law and caught a block. for anybody else tempted: i know llms may be deemed legal, but please try to grasp that a) that doesn't make it not theft & b) people who work on this stuff understand it as theft. www.404media.co/doom-loop-op...
as usual, @hamiltonnolan.bsky.social gets it: www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/risk-factors
