Very effective and informative. Thank you for sharing. Just out of curiosity: Why was there a need for a custom video player?

I wanted to be able to adjust the video crop last-minute (without re-rendering), so I didn’t want to bake the timestamps into the frames. And I had just built a custom video player for a separate project - with support for HTML subtitles - so this was a nice use case.

Second reason is that I wanted to fully control the player UI, autoplay, the scrub bar, overlays etc. With standard players like YouTube you’re limited in that regard.

Thank you. Working with gif as output format for animated data viz in the past I realized that a separate video editing step would help in getting the details right. I'll try your toolchain next time.
