On Tuesday afternoon, the Public Safety Committee of Los Angeles City Council finally lived up to its name by recommending a veto on the LAPD-backed contract to partner with Axon, a Flock competitor that sells AI surveillance cameras and drones.

Hugo Soto-Martinez and Nithya Raman, the two DSA-LA members who sit on Public Safety Committee, led a vote along with Curren Price to recommend a veto on the contract. Councilmembers Traci Park and John Lee voted in support of the Axon contract.

The contract, along with the committee's recommendation, will reach the entire Los Angeles City Council during their Wednesday session. DSA members and other community members who are opposed to corporate mass surveillance can visit dsa.la/axe-axon for tools to leave public comment.
