Truly sad, though sadly not truly surprised, to see this. Free Thinking is a great programme, and for many years was a rare and wonderful space for the discussion of ideas by artists, activists, and academics, and somewhere that took research and thinking seriously.

Doubly saddened to learn today that this means the BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers scheme has been indefinitely "paused". For me and for many arts & humanities academics, being an NGT was an opportunity to share ideas with BBC viewers and listeners, and it created so much great public scholarship.

I am too old to have ever been considered even remotely eligible for a role as an NGT. That is only the smallest of losses. The scrapping of the NGT programme & such programmes as FT & Thinking Allowed is yet another move by the BBC away from the Reithian principles of inform, educate & entertain!!!
