pretty cool: deer.social configured to point to a self-hosted bsky appview which reads from a self-hosted relay which subscribes to a self-hosted PDS which is where this "hello world" post originated it's bluesky independent from bluesky

"bsky's auth"? could you clarify?

well im not into all the technical specifics, but certain people have told me that bluesky is not federated because you still have to connect to bsky's authentication servers to login. is that no longer true because people are running their own relays?

Yeah no worries! Basically, this is the service that Bluesky uses to say which user ID is yours. That’s why I think maybe the people who were talking to you were referencing it; it’s run by Bluesky and so even if you run your own version of the app, you have to check in with it

They want to move it to an independent foundation in the future, so that way there’s more separation. Or maybe also some alternatives too. But it’s one of the things that’s hardest to swap out with your own. Not technically, but socially. What if two versions of the service disagree on who is who!
