Fun fact: ginkgo is one of the oldest tree species on earth - approximately 290 million years old - having survived “The Great Dying”. Most planted ~today are male cloned cultivars because the female fruit smells bad, but it takes 20-35 years for them to mature to tell if it's fruit-bearing

Councillor Josh Matlow introduces a mysterious motion about the "Female Ginkgo Trees of Toronto." Nunziata: I've never heard of it. Matlow: You're about to. Nunziata: I didn't know they had female trees. Matlow: Please don't read too much into it. It's the fruit. The fruit is really stinky.

it seems very unlikely this is urgent unless Matlow proposes cutting down every female ginkgo tree in the city or something - they only have fruit for a few weeks in the fall - curious what his call is bsky.app/profile/grap...

Councillor Gord Perks objects to Matlow's female tree motion. "I don't see how this is urgent." He asks for a recorded vote on whether to add it to the agenda. Female Ginkgo Tree Motion is ADDED to the agenda on an 18-3 vote. Council will debate the Female Ginkgo trees later.

bizarre motion that doesn't have any reasonable outcome other than staff directing forestry to cut down 20+ year-old trees? calls it urgent but also asks it to be addressed post-2027 - as an example, the Ginkgo in Berczy park is a female. It's fine. They're fine. bsky.app/profile/grap...
