That’s why I put my book (digital and audio) for sale direct on my own site, DRM free. Still available elsewhere for visibility and for those who wish to be locked in. But I’d rather take the hit on those platforms and sell direct. Plus, direct allows me to actually connect with my readers.

This rental scheme was set up via the DMCA, established after 9/11. Yes, publishing companies took advantage of post-attack fear to pack restrictions on fair use. Now, with eBooks & streaming, it is entirely out of control. If I buy it, I should own it, not have it on just 1 of the 5 devices I own.

At this point, we are exactly doing what the industry always wanted. The industry doesn’t want to sell stuff because it wants us not to own stuff. So they can make sure that they can give stuff to us as often as possible. This is also why the industry is about to kill the home video market …

I use Calibre (tho there are others) to manage my ebooks. I can convert them to the format I need, send them to others, etc. I luckily managed to download my kindle books before Amazon shut down that option, tho you can still access books via a usb from old G3 kindles & do what you like with them.
