I had to drop last night but I had a lot of fun with Guns of Eschaton It does actually recreate a unique Souls-feel not just because of mechanics (which are cribbed heavily) but… You know how DeS/DS felt when you first played them? Like ARPG but “different” enough that it took getting used to?

GoE reminds me a lot of it because it bucks a lot of standard FPS convention. Like you click to cock the hammer and then again to shoot. Shots are crazy important but ammo is treated more like MP. Turning the cylinder to load special bullets or using bandoliers, etc. is slow and calculated…

But you’re in a gunfight! You have a dodge “roll” (dash) and a parry but it’s heady. It’s easy to do those things in the tutorial but in the real thing? “Oh my god TWO people are shooting at me? How do I deal?!” which is normally not a thing you are thinking in an FPS. I really like it!

This is the kind of game balance I love to see. Very small-scale, mundane encounters that are actually incredibly tense because all the things most other games take for granted are given way more weight. Reloading guns is definitely one of those things that would actually be hardcore anxiety irl

Also it’s got neat little things like individual loading a special bullet or reloading half the cylinder will take longer than a full reload!
