On this day in 2009, a Louisiana official withheld a marriage license from an interracial couple, claiming he did "not believe in mixing races in that way." He had denied marriage licenses to several interracial couples the previous two years.

The governor of LA called for Bardwell to be ousted. Other officials disavowed him. He resigned without explanation just about a month later. Good riddance. FTR I’ve been in an interracial marriage for 43 years & counting.
