I'm not above a simple roll-under-INT for incidental knowledge but I really like the idea of burning time for knowledge.
Some knowledge in my game has a level requirement, like "you need to be at least a 4th-level MU to understand these runes." Gives PCs a reason to backtrack or petition a patron.
I like the level requirement thing. It gives a way players can feel like they're playing a skillful and knowledgeable character where the mechanics back that up
I do like info gating occasionally but I don't like levels as much, but yeah that totally works. I'd gate information by either giving players something they must achieve or by reputation. They need to have a good standing with the library faction to get access to their vaults. Something like that.
So many games throw out that phrase as though it were a special insight that fixes a problem every other game has, but then in practice you roll for basically everything just like every other game, because it doesn't specify anything interesting that you explicitly don't have to roll for.
So, stuff a character just knows is all either Common (for the character's backgrounds) or stuff they've picked up from an adventure? the mechanics here don't support any other ways a character might already just know something that the player has to be told
The system doesn't generate a way for a character to be especially knowledgeable or observant. Admittedly, l/h/s doesn't cover that either; an elf with an ability to detect nearby secret doors x-in-6 gets that info passively (like a landmark), but only sometimes (like a secret)
Abilities like that are a fourth quadrant, almost (splitting on free/costly and chancy/certain), being free (costing only that you can only try the ability once) but chancy,
Oh okay. For that example I'd rule that they can just use their ability and treat it as Obscure without the cost/risk if the fiction allows it but the player would need to say they are invoking the ability. If I want to stay in the framework. Other characters have to spent time or risk to find it
