I don't think the critics of "alt text scolding" realize that there's a difference between scolding someone who is clearly disabled and has publicly said they are or indicated it in other ways for not using alt text...🧵

compared to scolding someone who has never made any such indication and spends their time posting pictures with literally just 4 words of text on it and will continue to ignore anyone who asks them to use it.

I've asked for alt text from disabled accounts and then backtracked and apologized when they made it clear that it's something they struggle with. But other accounts will not even acknowledge you when you politely ask for it in their replies and I think that DOES deserve scolding.

It genuinely pisses me off that popular accounts that claim to stand for human rights still choose to be unintentionally ableist. It takes you 2-3 minutes if even that to simply describe what the image is, or copy-pasting the text you are hellbent on screenshotting without linking to.

There's nuance to be had here, we shouldn't scold disabled people for not using it if that's something they struggle with. I know a lot of autistic people might struggle with that, and since I am autistic it would be very bad of me to not acknowledge that just because it's not a problem for me.

But we SHOULD scold (if that is even the right word?) the popular accounts with no indication they aren't able-bodied that CLEARLY don't give 5 flying fucks about excluding their disabled followers who simply will not be able to consume most of their content because they couldn't be bothered.

Not to mention that these accounts will sometimes rage at you for asking for it over and over, while still claiming they stand for leftist values and care about human rights when in reality they just care about the attention and grift. They deserve to be shamed, in my honest opinion.
