/ Workshop CFP Resilient Societies: Shocks, Adaptation and the Persistence of Inequality in Historical Perspective. How have societies responded to historical shocks, and why have some individuals or societies proved more resilient than others? LSE, 20–21 May 2027

/ We welcome papers from across the social sciences examining historical environmental, epidemiological, economic, political and household-level shocks. Think epidemics, droughts, floods, war, displacement, income loss, bereavement and more.

/ We are particularly interested in how shocks affected mortality, health, fertility, migration, living standards, education, labour markets and social mobility, historical economic demography writ large.

/ We also want to understand adaptation: which technological, institutional, political, community and household responses reduced harm, redistributed risk or reinforced existing inequalities?

/ Submit a 300–500 word abstract by 23 November 2026. Registration and meals are covered, and limited travel/accommodation funding is available (see website for details). Please share widely!
