1. The Arizona legislature passed three anti-trans bills... but they did not become law. That is because Governor Katie Hobbs has just vetoed all of them. They would have barred birth certificate updates and banned colleges from mentioning gender identity. Subscribe to support my journalism.

"Focus on real issues" is a good line against transphobic policy, but I think it's starting to lose its effectiveness. Transphobia is their policy. The phantasm of gender is the greatest threat to them, as it signifies all of the other threats to their fascist and authoritarian dream for America.

2. HB2438 passed both the Arizona House and Senate along strict party lines. The legislation states that “in order to protect the integrity and accuracy of vital records… the sex designation of a person may not be changed on the person’s original birth certificate as a result of sex change surgery.”

3. Hobbs, vetoing it, issued this statement: “Today, I vetoed House Bill 2438. This bill will not lower costs, will not increase opportunity, and will not enhance security or freedom for Arizona. I encourage the Legislature to focus on real issues that matter and impact people’s everyday lives.”

4. The governor also vetoed Senate Bills 1694 and 1256. SB 1694 sought to prohibit any institution of higher education in Arizona from receiving state funding if it offered courses related to “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” - including a course that even MENTIONS gender identity.

5. Hobbes issued this statement: "Today I vetoed SB1694. Our state universities and community colleges play a vital role in developing Arizona's workforce... Jeopardizing their state funding with a bill that lacks clarity would lead to negative effects on the state's workforce and economy."

Seems to me that pulling funding from any educational institution until they remove topics of study and information that conservatives don't like is the actual "coddling of the American mind". If they can just pretend they don't exist, then they won't exist because that's totally how reality works.

As a trans woman who lives in Arizona, Katie Hobbs is the reason I can live here. If Kari Lake had won, I wouldn't be here today, and I'm not quite sure if I mean that I would have had to leave Arizona or I wouldn't be here to post this. I'm just glad I didn't have to find out.

Gotta love our governor. I hope she wins reelection - she's much better at governing than campaigning, but with any luck the blue wave will carry her. Regardless, a prime example about how, for all the flaws of the party, Democrats are worlds better than their fascist counterparts.
