When attempting to understand people, it’s good to step back and take in their beliefs, values, and goals. Most people operate out of a belief system even if it’s not formalized and even if it doesn’t align with anything that “makes sense” to us.

Once we develop a framework for others’ beliefs, we can “step inside” their worldview and rationalize through their way of thinking. This exercise can remove the “shock” of unexpected behavior and can help navigate an unpredictable world.

When something shocking happens, it’s an opportunity take in new information iterate on our understanding. Some ascribe to a structured set of beliefs and actively operate out of those beliefs daily. There are others whose beliefs are driven by deep needs even they may not understand.

Lots of people say they believe one set of structured beliefs but their behavior tells us otherwise. Regardless, beliefs are still there even if they’re unknown to their holder.

If we’re going to continue to function as a pluralistic society we must go deeper than sound bites that allow us to ascribe others as evil because their actions don’t fit into our worldview rubric.

and show they have never put themselves through the mental exercise of questioning themselves and making sure they know why they are who they are and why they believe what they believe, I don’t like people who don’t know why they are as they are. That shows ignorance to me.

I was trying to explain this to 20 year olds the other day. They appeared to be completely devoid of any concept or idea of “understanding what makes others believe what they believe”, the idea of walking in others shoes. I was trying to explain why I personally have a hard time finding my own..

Beliefs because I question them all, I challenge myself with what ifs and differences, what if this happened to me or I was raised this way what would I believe, or I put myself into others and try to trace back to the beginning the things I think shaped their beliefs and what or differently would

I have done things? What would I believe in those circumstances? I personally can’t latch onto hardly anything because I believe in nearly everything it’s completely possible that circumstances would change everything so then what is really true? What is good and bad? Right or wrong?
