That’s what happens when the only thing going for you is the myth of past greatness. Southerners are raised believing they are victims. Anything that changes makes them feel that their poverty isn’t the ordained, noble suffering their grandad, preachers and Epsteins told them it is.

It’s why they are so invested in evangelicalism. It’s God that makes them suffer. God and whatever “others” their super rich establishment points at. They’re not the only ones, it’s a common enough cultural issue, but they are entire states on the federal dole who aren’t working to change.
