2006 I joined SpringSource, now Pivotal / Broadcom. Nearest colleagues in NL, AT, and UK. Worked fine: People were used to distribution because of the work on open source software. So fully remote collaboration is possible for quite some time. Why return to office?

Getting remote-first right takes effort, more than just defaulting to the office. Blaming lack of proximity is a management crutch, leading to following the RTO herd. Yet, amazing performance I've seen from experienced remote teams proves it works if you invest creativity & time in connection.

I am not sure office takes less effort. I’m trying to say remote is natural in certain circumstances. But YMMV
