With Pokémon Unite EoL I really am curious what makes some Live Service games stick but not others. How are Fortnite, Granblue, Pokémon GO, Honkai Impact 3rd still around after a decade but new ones keep coming up and dying.

Partially, longevity is a self-perpetuating cycle I think. The longer a game has existed the more entrenched it is so new players are more sure that it isn't going to die suddenly so they keep going on.

I think a lot of it is just being there in the right place at the right time. Though in Pokémon Go's case there's absolutely also just the appeal of having a Pokémon game on your phone.

But I do think trying to make a live-service game now is just a fool's errand when everyone already has "their game".

(To clarify, with "Pokémon game on your phone" I mean something that's similar-ish to the mainline games in that you can catch Pokémon and battle with them)

Yeah that is true but I don't think that can carry you forever (see Mario Kart Tour) Though Pokémon GO is not as much of a slot machine that MKT was
