For those new to BlueSky, I write novels and comics in multiple universes. My latest STAR WARS novel, THE LIVING FORCE, came out this year; I also wrote the first STRANGE NEW WORLDS novel, THE HIGH COUNTRY. And now BATMAN: RESURRECTION, the first original novel tying into the Tim Burton Bat-films.

Just got my hands on your latest masterpiece—absolutely love it! It took me straight back to the late 80s, sitting beside my dad in a dark theater, watching Tim Burton’s iconic Batman unfold on the big screen. Pure nostalgia. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

I've also written tie-ins for Battlestar Galactica, Halo, Mass Effect, and The Simpsons, among others. My handle, farawaypress.com, is also my website, where I have behind the scenes notes on many of my works. Always happy to answer questions about my experiences working in licensed universes!

First quick answer: Many writers have commuted between the Trek and Wars universes, including the very first Star Wars tie-in author! Alan Dean Foster wrote the Star Trek Log books adapting the animated series before writing the adaptation for Star Wars, followed by SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE.

To a question aspiring authors often ask: Because most media tie-in work is published by licensees, there's no way to approach one with a proposal. They're not allowed to look at anything from outside. Rather, publishers reach out to writers they want to work with; nothing's created before that.

Getting those invitations is a matter of building a reputation elsewhere as a good and reliable writer. I got Star Trek work because I'd done Star Wars work; I got that work because I'd written for Marvel, and comics magazines before that. In a way, it's like getting your passport stamped.
