We thank @aoc.bsky.social for speaking the truth about age verification in the House E&C hearing today! As she stated plainly, and we agree, age verification is a smoke-screen for censorship. It is NOT about kids safety!

Censorship isn't even the major issue. Hypothetically let's say I created a social media platform that people talked on for years, mentioning other online profiles to each other. Now, new update, in order to use my social media platform you need to register an ID.

So you give your ID to me, because you want to continue using my service. Eventually I get a subpoena from the government for your posts. In those posts, you mentioned other online profiles, and since your identity is linked to your account, that means it was you who said those things.

So attaching your real life identity to a single online profile that mentions other online services creates a sort of spider web effect where because you have a valid identity in one place it can be used to pin down your other online activity. Nepal's citizens organized a revolution on discord.

I heard there’s a decentralised option we could use instead where you verify on one platform and send a certificate to different sites to proof your adult without giving your face, but no the government don’t wanna invest in it or any sites wanna accept it currently
