Being an Open Source Contributor™ has long been perceived as a badge of honor. But today, people pointing their LLM at some random issue that they have no interest in, without reading or understanding the output... Some of it gets merged, so what is "I contributed to X" worth anymore?

Y'all are creating a lot of noise, and not doing _any_ of the engineering work. When we say "not like this because <reason>" and get an LLM-generated fix within 5 minutes, what have you learned? Have you furthered your understanding of the project so that the next PR is better?

If you're doing this for credibility, I'm not sure that's going to work long term. Want to contribute? Use the project, test the limits, find bugs, report them, suggest improvements. Show that you've got skin in the game and are ready to put in the work - we'll happily take your contributions :)

“Making things work” is the absolute bare minimum a Spring framework engineer needs to do. Making it consistent, user friendly, and ensuring that it everyone is happy; not “someone”, is much more important.

Contributions are supposed to bring something. AI-based contributions require critical thinking and reviews. Otherwise we can do it ourself. When you prevent maintainers to not merge other PRs or to implement new features by submitting slope, you hurt the project.

When you are running Claude on GitHub issues of a famous OSS project, generate PR without proper review or testing, and just click submit, that’s not engineering. That’s looking for beeing listed as an OSS contributor in the worst possible way, that hurts the maintainers but other users too.

I disagree - a fix is not enough. Engineers works within constraints. I If my window leaks too much air and you seal it shut with silicon, it fixes the leak, great! But I won’t be able to open it again, not so great. the maintainers’ job is to have that context - please make it easy for us!

if this is just driving coding agents, I can do it just as well as anyone else - describing the problem should be more than enough. But if it’s about contributing, you should probably take the time to build that context for yourself. We get too many drive-by PRs and we have to prioritize them.
