Feels like a ticking timebomb that the tech industry is seemingly moving towards monorepos and git does not scale well beyond the size of Linux. I speculate Mercurial will have a comeback. Reading up on Mercurial and it has a lot going for it compared to git in common scenarios like rebasing.

I feel we’ve had this moment years ago when huge repos have moved to Git, which led to Sapling from Meta and VFS for Git by Microsoft, which are just two notable examples

I don’t expect Mercurial will gain mainstream adoption, but I do suspect we’ll see more large US tech companies grow out of git, drooling over what Meta and Google use internally.
