Caught up on Tsutomu Nihei's Tower Dungeon, and it's fascinating in how I love it deeply and find its compositions, architecture, and setting a real step up for Nihei, but also the way the moving parts of the plot are conveyed show a real roughness to it

At this point it definitely reads like an actual play OSR game, where a huge number of characters are needed to make the greater scale of combat work, but the way it gets all the pieces together feels rushed for a manga

That all being said, every exposition-y conversation is had while walking through the coolest hallways you've ever seen, and the sheer variety of colorful characters is cool, and speak to a rich world, so it's hard to be put off by its belligerence

Its got the delicacy of a baseball bat, but its got a lot of heart for the mouse girl to say "I'm sorry that I saw your secret penis, but I'll keep your penis secret forever bestie. I'm soooo chill with it" I'd die for her

The striking use of spot blacks that feel like they evoke the mood of a game map, and the shifting of focal length to create areas that feel both concrete and impossible are a real testament to Nihei being the master of architecture, and that he's only gotten more honed over time

Seeing him shift away from sci-fi greebling to knock it out of the park with gorgeous brickwork in an impressive labyrinth is a treat
