this is the kind of logic you see when people work backwards from predetermined conclusions, or employ intensely motivated reasoning, or are surrounded by social bubbles or echo chambers, or are just schemers or useful idiots.

Look. The argument is very simple, I'll explain. 1. Consciousness is mysterious; neuroscientists don't quite understand how it works 2. LLMs are mysterious; LLM vendors don't quite understand how they work 3. Therefore, LLMs are consciousness. In logic we call this an "extremely correct syllogism"

it sucks that this subject has turned into another front in a dozen different culture wars but it might be inevitable when the platforms for discussion about it are so compromised. the podcasts are PR. the quality of conversation from the "leading minds" is flat and repetitive and condescending.

on one hand, i love this topic, i grew up re-reading GEB until it started making sense & i like to see people talking about consciousness.

on the other, "electric minds" and "machine consciousness" are dopey sci-fi fantasies and dehumanizing reverse-mystic pan-psychicism. when serious people who should know better promote them and when platforms present these ideas in a credulous, one-sided manner, it's impossible not to ask why.
