There are new and specific numbers in this story, so it’s worth reading. I continue to resent the lack of credit to Nick Schwellenbach at @pogo.org, Dan Friedman at @motherjones.com, and me, who have previously reported every other aspect of this story, including that the sale prices were very high.

And they are in no danger of going out of business by rightfully crediting you and others! It's such horseshit. It is based on a culture of petty theft that comes DIRECTLY from the circ wars between Pulitzer and Hearst. It is an extremely dumb practice in the Internet age. And THEY CAN AFFORD IT.

The nyt has long pattern of refusing to credit independent journalists, and in some instances lifting important elements of their work. The Mississippi Free Press, Bolts, the Cornell Sun and The Handbasket have all been victims to varying degrees

This disreputable practice is bred by its leaders’ sense of entitlement. The nyt feels entitled to prey on independent journalists … like those at Fansplainjng @elizabethminkel.bsky.social wrote about this. I encourage everyone to read her story bsky.app/profile/eliz...

WELL. If you wondered why I had zero things to say about the NYT piece on the HR AI fic situation last month...I had zero things to say publicly then. 🥲 Thank you to everyone who discussed this situation with me and read a draft of this. I tried my best to illustrate these longstanding dynamics:

This sense of entitlement ofc infects other aspects of the nyt coverage. It feels entitled, for example, to cover trans ppl, often negatively, even as it has had a yearslong de facto ban on assigning or hiring trans journalists to cover trans issues

Nick and Dan first reported on William Walters’ donation to the Noem PAC and the awarding of a shady contract A YEAR AGO. I first reported his connection to Daedalus and all of the airplane purchases for a markup in February. I first reported that the final planes were purchased under Mullin’s

I have no illusions that NYT would ever offer me a job, nor do I want one. But they may want to consider that their unwritten policy of not crediting previous reporting (the way everyone else in journalism does!) may be costing them the hiring of great journalists they actually do want.

Sure. There are journalists who are so thirsty to be fancy (or desperate for any job) that they’ll complain for years about being dicked over by NYT and then leap at the chance to work there. But not everyone. And I think that number of refusers grows as NYT’s misbehavior does.
