So much going on there, clearly deep poverty but pretty decent old rocking chairs perhaps from a more prosperous time in the family? And the range looks very early Victorian, well over a hundred years old by 1963. Toasting fork in his hand?

No. The house was very dilapidated and it was still in use by the very old previous owner. I would have loved to buy the house and keep the stove where it was but my wife sensibly vetoed it.

The old boy (what am I saying? He's probably younger than I am now) appears to be comfortable and warm, with decent clothes and shoes, so he's doing better in many ways than today's poor.

Or was the chair bought from a junk shop as very unfashionable? My grandmother (died 2007) never had a gas or electric cooker. When she and my grandfather bought their house in 1947 it had a Victorian range. They replaced that with an Esse in the 1960s, and the Esse with an Aga in the 1990s.
