Kids should NEVER be pushed to replace their own experiences, thoughts, and skills with 'A.i.' - that's a horribly damaging thing to do to a child. So I'm cautiously pleased to see that NYC is banning "A.i." for grades 2K-8! But the guidelines allow for "A.i." "pilot programs" for grades 9-12...

NYC needs to make sure that even these pilot programs don't push kids in 9-12 to use generative "A.i." for writing or art. No replacing process with product, no deskilling, no forced cognitive decline.

The guidelines also fail by allowing teachers to use "A.i." for lesson plans. "A.i." routinely injects falsehoods and racial bias into its outputs - right wing billionaires who can easily amp up "A.i."s bigoted outputs, as we've seen with Musk. Unacceptable for lesson plans.

The guidelines also require "A.i. literacy" programs for grades 9-12. Sounds good - but many "A.i. literacy" programs I've seen are funded or influenced by the "A.i." industry and just push people to use the tech. "A.i." literacy in the schools CANNOT be funded/influenced by the "A.i." industry...

...and any "A.i." literacy must include "A.i." QUITERACY - meaning students must be given the practical tools and knowledge to ELIMINATE "A.i." from their education and work if they so choose.

Another potential gap in the new NYC "A.i." rules - the rules should explicitly forbid "A.i." generated images in illustrations for lessons. "A.i." CONSTANTLY introduces mistakes/inaccuracies in images - unacceptable for education, particularly history.

And of course: LLMs and generative "A.i." are based on massive, industrialized theft from artists and writers by far right billionaires. They should not be used by a people-first and/or socialist administration on that basis alone.

Amid the hype, it's often overlooked or minimized that an AI frequently gives incorrect answers. If they don't already know better, young minds will be loading up on misinformation bc it's presented confidently as factual even when it's 100pc incorrect.
