Democracy and civil society depend on taxing billionaires so ruthlessly they lose their obscene, outsized political power.

How is that supposed to happen in a capitalist system, where, by definition, those with billions in capital have obscene, outsized political power? They are the ones with the power to tax, not us.

No, you don't and no you can't. You live in a capitalist country. You've never had anything close to democracy. The only way you could ever exert "democratic" influence using those power in numbers is outside your formal political system.

No, not at that scale. U.S. billionaires have about $8.4T in total wealth. Medicare alone costs the federal government about $1.1T a year. Even if you confiscated every billionaire’s entire net worth at estimated market value, that funds only about 7.6 years of Medicare, assuming no cost increases.

How many if the problems we face today could be solved by making billionaires extinct? We leave them 500 million each and take the rest and invest it in schools, research, a decent healthcare system, public transportation, communications infrastructure and public support services.

Okay, but if you start a successful company and its valuation goes over $500M, should you be forced to sell it? What about Taylor Swift, who fought to own her music catalog, should she be forced to sell it again? A federal wealth tax would also be unconstitutional, but let’s ignore reality for now.

Hell, Scandinavia, always lauded as a utopian ideal by the American left (even tho I rather die liver cancer then live there) has plenty of billionaires (as a percentage of the population more than the US) mostly in form of founders or heirs of family-run companies.

No one has contributed a $billion worth of value to society. If you’ve “earned” that much, you’ve done it by not paying others what they’re worth or thru investments that should have been taxed higher. But more importantly the influence that money buys is very dangerous. No one should have that.

Most people who become self-made billionaires do so through unrealized gains. Therefore, taxing that wealth at the federal level would, under the current constitutional framework, be unconstitutional. Thank god for our great and wise founders they truly were great and wise men.
