"Sacrificing clarity, coherence, meaning, quality" etc. is in the sense described inherent to prompting an LLM, and not in any way added to by the watermarking process. You do not have more control as the end user over a RNG than a PRNG.

But my objection does not apply to all LLM writing. LLM output can be better or worse. I am more convinced today than a week ago that SynthID watermarking makes it worse. Maybe only slightly worse. But it has to be worse. That’s how it works.

First, thanks, that's genuinely appreciated. Neither flu or potty-training is particularly bad as these things go, but both are discombobulating. As is the threat of imminent redundancy, which I keep forgetting about. Okay, I think the problem is that - even granting for argument's sake that... 1/

... it does make the writing worse (I'm not convinced, but I can see how the argument goes) - it does so in a way and to a degree that is swamped by using an LLM in the first place. Your concern is that it reduces semantic precision. 2/

"Botching all the technical details" is not really fair, looking at it again. Apologies. We're potty-training at the moment, and I have flu, and judging the energy and emotion of the moment comes less easily than usual.

Not sure which to wish you more luck with, the potty-training or the flu, but I wish you luck with both. (I want to say the flu is worse, but I went through parental potty-training 20 years ago and I remember it more vividly than the last time I had the flu.)
