The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.
Brazil and Serbia fantastically stood up when the chips were literally down. We’re not there yet. Would be great of course if we never were. But that would require a principled and progressive government.
1/2
In the Chamber of Deputies, the far-right Partido Liberal has 121 seats.
FE (Federação Brasil da Esperança, an electoral grouping of Workers', Communist, & Green parties) has 88. Federação União Progressista (UPB) is 3rd with 87. It's NOT Progressive: it's Conservative.
4th place to Centrists
Many are cheering ONE election result in Brazil, but in fact the news is mixed. Lula has won the presidency, but Bolsonaro's right-wing Partido Liberal is the largest party in both Chamber of Deputies & Senate... by large margins.
Better news from Serbia, where Student List won absolute majority!

The Centrists sometimes vote right, sometimes left.
In the Senate, the results were even more disturbing, with Bolsonara's far-right PL winning more than 3x Lula's PT. 3rd place for "big tent" MDB, then back to right-wing "Progressive" Party for 4th place.
Lula is going to have a tough time!
