The quotes around "just" practically answer that question :) We had an opportunity to take that library into the JDK when it was created for Java EE, and declined then, because it was a poor fit for the JDK.

Looks ghastly and very cumbersome. Multiple use of instanceof usually indicates OOP design flaws. Does JSON actually deserves separate type hierarchy? Why not map directly into native Java types? Why not throw exception if parse fails?
