New Orleans has so many completely unique subcultures- and when you are in it it seems so normal- but sometimes I remember just how odd it is. Like- every weekend in summer- gays have pool parties. It’s stated each time that it’s BYOB, but generally the hosts have food and drink already.

Bring your own towel, arrive 30 minutes after stated start time, leave before 6pm unless specifically requested to stay, and of course bring drinks to share. Typically a good idea to come with your own insulated non-glass cup.

I can’t emphasize enough how many of these there are every weekend at private homes in this city- and how careful invite lists are curated. Getting too many invites to attend them all means you are doing well socially!

This is just a thing in this sub community- and there are so many others! It’s a city teeming with community and that means so many traditions and opportunities and things to explore.

I love NYC too- but most of the specific things there are just public behaviors and norms that are NYC specific… very little on the community / culture front.
