this is how the vast majority of gamers online interact with the medium on a daily basis

i keep getting recommended videos with really zoomed in pictures of videogame water that say shit like "this is why theyre lying to you" and it really helps me understand why everything feels insane

for context i use youtube for music, vods of friends at the table streams, old japanese car magazine VHS rips and the occasional old meme. they want you to engage in the culture war shit so bad. they need more insane unpleasant conspiratorial weirdos for the machine

What do you mean by gamers online? There're definitely hyper-online gamers this appeals to, but those are the same kind of folks who are loudest in any kind of online space. Small sample size, but my office's 'games' slack has one or two of this type, and a bunch of rational human beings.

i mean people who are engaging with games on the internet beyond just kinda casually playing them, this is what they're going to see most of unless they go out of their way very hard to avoid it

True. I guess my question is just, how many folks have just disengaged from games content altogether? Like, personally, I'm at the point where if a video is about a game, and it's not from a creator I follow, or something I'm specifically looking into, I'm basically never clicking on it.

Is it bad that I also just have no fucking idea what they're mad and/or happy about? Like they're mad at Western devs, but Clair Obscure is by a French dev team. Are the just saying that they like it because there are hot people in it?... I'm about to find out it's a race thing aren't I?

we exist in a market of infinite controversy as people become more desperate to find anything to mine for cash. A kirby game could be released tomorrow with him wearing different shoes and it'd be 2 weeks of clickbait videos on how the franchise is permanently ruined.

It's a problem, though I watched that first one (with some trepidation) and to its credit it spends a good deal of time pointing out that the story of the game's development is way oversimplified. I had some issues with what it said but it was more balanced than most and what that thumbnail suggests

I feel like we're on different Youtubes. Mine mainly shows me movie fight compilations, easy cooking videos with all of the prep and cleanup steps conspicuously removed, and Better Call Saul clips

And when they aren't using it to yell about "Modern AAA games" (Aka, ignore al the actual bad shit in AAA games to instead yell about queer people and women), they fucking post barely disguised 2000s ass "Japanese people cant make video games" type racism

even a completely uncontroversial game, a well liked cult hit with a feel good dev story that that isn’t particularly daring or controversial in any way, is pure grist for the endless culture war. there’s no pushing back on it really. this is video games now we made our bed

I would say this is all culture now a culture war for everything I’ve seen it with books, movies, comics, the general internet and websites everything is a part of the culture war in real life I have had to hear about family complain about DEI

especially with movies suffer from this especially now. even smart people I do respect really have to talk about how low to middle brow big budget movies are saving cinema like fucking top gun or whatever. everyone are gamers now, the 21st century culture and art is on the same level of gamer shit.

Been said many a time before, but boy it sucks that one of the the major end results of GamerGate was basically a complete /v/ cultural victory in determining the tone of online video game discussion across the board

I'm so tired of this I am just happy a new studio from my country made a good game but when you go on internet it's just people using this game as a weapon in any sort of debates/discourse. I would be so sad if a game I put hours into making ended up like that.

This is not quite true. Some of the content e.g. Bellular News, is positive and praising this as an example of what is being achived by smaller companies. This is part of the anti-corporate movement that opposes the cash grab mentalitiy of some AAA companies (day one DLC, endless lootboxes) e.t.c.

I'm baffled at this kind of stuff for multiple totally unrelated reasons, honestly. Why does anyone want this kind of content and, if they do, why would they want it as a video instead of text?

It's weird, like- we have done nothing but reward over-the-top sensationalist thumbnails and yelling screaming angry people with yelling screaming angry takes on youtube videos for the last 15 years with both attention and money, and somehow it ended up like this.
