with this inevitable tension about gameplay identity with this modern era of revivals with castlevania, shinobi, ninja gaiden etc it does make me think man streets of rage 4 really was fuckin good. its not close to 2's level and it's twice as long as it should be but its a damn solid streets of rage

The only modern beat em up that truly gets it is Fight'N Rage which id put up against any of the classics Streets of rage 4 is so close to greatness but theres nothing wrong with just being really good Shredders revenge and marvel galactic invasion are pretty good but dont stand up to the classics

I don't think the beat 'em up revival had any legs to actually revitalize the genre but we got a lot of pretty good games out of it before it petered itself out. tbh, the old games only had a handful of standouts too, a lot of it was coin-op pablum at best.

Unpopular opinion, the X-Men beat 'em up only stands out as a classic because of the 6 player cab and the Konami beat 'em ups are interchangeable depending on whether you're a Turtles or cowboy fan. CPS2 Capcom beat 'em ups are flavor based but AvP is my fav.

None of the other Streets of Rage games are close to 2's level either, fwiw I think I do actually like 4 a bit more than 2, the long arcade run still feels acceptable to me. Banger OST too, Deriviere put his whole pussy into it. The DLC characters did end up overtuned though.
